Pain is a Great Motivator

I just had to share this issue of my good friend Kathleen Bren’s ezine The Coaching Zone. I love the concept she is talking about this month. One of my favorite quotes is by Shaki Gawain “People will let go when the pain of holding on is greater than the fear of letting go.” Pain can help move you forward like nothing else. As people we are motivated by two things, either away from pain or towards pleasure. In fact I just took a class where the instructor stated that people are more motivated to avoid something bad from happening than to make something good happen.

Although no one likes pain however it isn’t something that can be avoided and it can be used to support you in moving forward. Take the pain and turn it into something valuable.

Pain is a Great Motivator

The world we live in is in a constant state of evolution. The only problem with human evolution is that it happens very slowly.

Often times we repeat old patterns of behavior that bring us to the brink of despair, but we can’t seem to stop ourselves until the pain of the current situation becomes so intolerable, we are willing to make the necessary changes needed to allow greater joy into our lives.

The part of us that fears change (even if it’s ultimately for the better) holds on tightly to the known, keeping us stuck in unsatisfying situations that suck the joy out of our lives, until our soul cries out for help.

In that moment we shift from unwilling to willing participants.

What situation or event is creating pain in your life? Do you say things to yourself like I can’t do anything about this, it’s just the deck of cards I was dealt, or it’s not my fault?

Statements like these leave you disempowered and feeling victimized. Focus on what you can do. Focus on opportunities and possibilities instead of the doors that have closed behind you. Dig deep and find out what you are made of.

Being a victim doesn’t feel good and it ultimately abdicates your own personal responsibility to yourself. Make a decision today to change a situation that you have been tolerating for far too long. Your happiness depends on it.
