If you have been following the Take Action Now Blog you know that I am throwing a card party for my sister. We are actually in the third week and things are going well except that what worked in theory doesn’t work in practice.
I thought if I sent a card a day she would receive a card a day. Yes in theory, but not in real life. In real life there are days when my sister receives a card, some days she doesn’t get any and others where she has a bonanza of cards, one day she got three. Not exactly sure how that all works.
So putting the Post Office issue aside my sister is loving getting a card a day. She expressed what I thought would be true, it is fun getting real mail. She says she looks forward to checking her mail every day wondering if there will be a card and what surprises it will hold.
So far her favorite card has come from Noah, my favorite waiter at TGIFriday’s. I am having people I know sign cards for my sister just to add a little excitement to the mix. Noah wrote a great diddy about how wonderful it was to be turning 47 and he was looking forward to seeing her soon (Noah has never met my sister and chances that he will are slim but it was cute for him to write that). I also included a $10 gift card from TGIFridays which made it a card with a surprise in it!
The other thing that is fun is I am talking to my sister every day. I call her or she calls me to see what if any card she got today and to chat about how much fun she is having with this project. That has been an unexpected bonus.
I was telling my friend Halley which will be 17 in a few months about what I was doing and she immediately figured out when I would need to start sending her cards so she could have a card a day for 17 days. Now I have people requesting card parties!
If you want to have a card party for someone here are some tips:
Give yourself plenty of time to find the cards. It isn’t as easy as just going to the card shop. I went all over town finding the right cards.
Get other people to sign them to add a little fun and mystery to the party. Or have friends and family of the birthday person sign them. You could even just ask everyone to send a card, however that is a little more risky because you can’t be sure they will do it. You would have to manage that one.
Put little surprises in the cards. I have put everything from a post-it-note pad, gift cards, bookmark, and little coins and tokens. If the card is a funny shape or has something protruding in it you will want to take it to the post office and have it checked. They actually have special 62 cent stamps for odd shape envelopes and things that are protruding (it isn’t that these may weigh more than a regular envelop they just require special handling so you have to pay a little more for them). Keep in mind that if you can get a stamp on it you can mail it.
So I am off to mail another card!

The Center of the Universe: A Memoir by Nancy Bachrach
You have to join me Monday, September 21st as I interview author Nancy Bachrach on Live the Day hosted on Blog Talk Radio. Nancy will be sharing the story of life with her family and how truth is much stranger than fiction. The book is hilarious, sad and amazing all at once as I am sure Nancy will be. I expect Nancy to surprise us with tales of her family and how a tragedy brought them back together and continues to impact their lives. I really don’t want to say much more because really you just have to experience Nancy and hear her story to believe it.
About Nancy: Nancy Bachrach worked in advertising in New York and Paris, spinning hot air like cotton candy, glorifying her clients’ beloved denture adhesives and powdered orange-juice substitutes. Before that, she was, sequentially, a clumsy waitress at Howard Johnson’s, an overzealous customer service rep fired for making genuine apologies, a stenographer for an insomniac poet, and a teaching assistant in the philosophy department at Brandeis University, where she was one chapter ahead of her class. She lives in New York City. This is her first book.
Listen in on Monday the 21st of September at 3pm MT or you can go to Blog Talk Radio after the show and listen to the recording. You can also listen to other archived shows at Blog Talk Radio or Live the Day Radio.
Know Your Goal, Make A Plan, Take Action
I have come to the conclusion that in order to create something new in our lives there are three necessary steps. The first one is to determine what we want. We must have something in mind that is compelling and inspiring. Once we know what we want, we must develop a plan of action. Not having a plan is like taking a road trip without a map. We might eventually get to our destination, but it will take us more time and effort. The same is true of goals. Without a plan, we will founder around and waste a lot of time and energy. And the final and most important step is to take action.
Taking action is the only way we are going to create our goals into reality. Taking action seems, for many, to be the hardest step. If you are not sure what to do to get started, that is fine. Just do something. The first step is the hardest. Often the path will unfold in front of us and reveal itself, but only after we make the first move. When we take action, we create a forward motion. We do not need to know exactly how everything will unfold. Often there is no way to know. We just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other and be willing to do what it takes to create our goals. Staying committed to being in action and not stopping until you reach your goal is the secret to creating what you want.
The secret to success requires a clear goal, a plan, and action. Having a goal without a plan is not really a goal; it is a dream. Taking action without having a plan is like following your dream in the dark. You might eventually get there, but it will take twice as much time and energy. Having a goal and a plan without acting will not support you in achieving anything. What you will end up with is a wish that you had, not the joy of having done it.
Do you have a goal you would like to achieve? What is your plan? Are you ready to take the actions necessary to make your goal a reality? I would love to hear what you are doing to make your goal a reality!
Talk is cheap
It is easy to talk about what you will do. Talk is cheap and takes little effort. Although talk might make you feel like you are moving along or that you will someday take action, it doesn’t help you accomplish anything unless you back it up with action. Talk is the beginning not the end of achievement. Unless you decide to take action the talk is a big waste of breath.
Many people talk about getting things done and achieving goals, but talk will not get you what you want. It is a start. Words can help formulate a plan and get you started, but, without any action to backup the words, nothing is going to happen. You have to do and not just talk.
It is easy to say what you are going to do. It is much more challenging to do it. However, words are powerful and can assist in guiding and directing you. Words can get you started, but alone they won’t be enough. You must pair words with action, and once you do, you will be surprised at what a powerful pair they make. Words will get you started and action will help you complete the goals.
Are you ready to back your words up with action? I would love to hear what you are ready to do to back up your words with action!
Actions Not Taken Don’t Count
If you could get credit for all the actions you meant to take but didn’t, imagine how different your life would be. Actions you don’t take don’t count.
There are times when I think, “I intended to do that.” I wonder how things would be different had I only done what I intended to do. Although there is no need to beat yourself up over what you didn’t do, it is a good idea to take a look at the reason you didn’t take action. What gets in your way? What stops you from doing what you say you want to do? Maybe you don’t want whatever it is badly enough or maybe fear gets in the way. Whatever stops you from taking action stops you from having the life you really want.
Action is the key to getting things done. It is the secret to success. Every action you take gets you one step closer to where you want to be. That shouldn’t be a surprise, but it does seem to be a challenge. We often say we are going to take action, and then don’t. Instead of beating yourself up over it, figure out what gets in your way and go around it, go under it, or go through it. Do whatever you need to do to get past what is stopping you. The longer you put off taking action, the longer you put off having what you want in your life. If you don’t mind putting off your life, that is okay. But if you want to create change in your life, or have more of what makes you happy, then the only way is to take action.
What has stopped you from taking the action that will get you what you want?
I shared that I was doing a card party for my sister last month on the Blog. My sister is turning 47 and I am sending her a card for everyone year she is old. Do you know how challenging it is to find 47 cards that say just the right thing? Well I have done it and the Card Party starts this week, today as a matter of fact.
For fun I have had some of my friends sign the cards. My friend Alyson Stanfield (artbizcoach.com) make a beautiful handmade card. My friend Dee Dukehart (http://www.deedukehart.com/) took a couple cards and is going to write a few poems in them for my sister (writing is Dee’s expertise and she writes amazing poems). My friend Julie signed a card from herself and a second card from the Taco Bell Dog!
The first card that is going out today has a poem I wrote in it that explains the whole process. I was channeling Dr. Seuss when I wrote it.
Ode to You
It’s your birthday – Happy Birthday to You
To Celebrate I am throwing a Card Party – It’s a big to do
For the next 47 Days a Card you will Get
This will be fun so don’t throw a fit
Some Cards will be funny – some will be smart
Some will be from people you know – some aren’t
Some cards will have Surprises straight from the Mall
Some will be empty with nothing at all
A card party you exclaim – What did I do to deserve this?
Nothing at all – you just happen to have a great sis.
The card with this poem went in the mail today. For the next 46 days I will mail a card. I am excited to see how it all works out. I am guessing some days will be a bonanza with several cards at once and some days there might not be any cards.
My friend Alyson shared with me she did a virtual party for her parents for their anniversary. She had people write down memories they had of her parents and send the memories to them.
Another friend did something similar for her boyfriend where she had people write down special memories they had of the special birthday guy and send them to her and she created a memory album.
My Aunt Linda gave my mom a card party on her last birthday and my mom got 125 cards. What Aunt Linda did was ask everyone to send a birthday card for my mom to her and she put them all in a special box and presented them to my mom on her birthday.
The idea is to share those special days – and make them more special by remembering.
I would love to hear how you have celebrated your special day or helped someone else celebrate theirs.

Solemate: Master Art of Aloneness & Transform Your Life
Join me September 14th at 3:00 pm MT as I interview Lauren Mackler, author of Solemate.
People spend years waiting for Prince or Princess Charming to complete them. And yet, more and more adults are living alone. In the U.S. today, there are 95.7 million single adults, nearly half of all U.S. adults. This is a major shift that’s been happening for decades, yet people’s attitudes about being alone have changed remarkably little. From early childhood, we’re taught that aloneness is something to pity, fear, or cause shame. All too often, adults measure each others well-being according to whether or not someone is married or in a committed relationship.
Listen as author, psychotherapist, and renowned life coach Lauren Mackler offers a fresh point of view that reframes aloneness as a positive state to embrace rather than avoid. She will provide a groundbreaking road map for achieving mastery of your life, so you can experience a sense of wholeness and well-being on your own. It’s about becoming the person you were meant to be, treating yourself well, and shedding the old beliefs and behaviors that limit your ability to realize your full potential. Rather than seeing someone to complete you, Mackler will tell you how to become the partner you seek, your own cherished solemate.
