Celebrate April

Greetings:

Oh my gosh there is a lot to celebrate in April. First of course there is April Fool's Day. Ever wonder where in the world that ever came from? Me too! So I did a little research on the Internet and this is what I found out.

April Fool's Day History

"The history of April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day is uncertain, but the current thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (new year's week) to January 1.

Communication traveled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1. These people were labeled "fools" by the general populace, were subject to ridicule and sent on "fool errands," sent invitations to nonexistent parties and had other practical jokes played upon them. The butts of these pranks became known as a "poisson d'avril" or "April fish" because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke."

If you want the rest of the story, and no fooling there is a lot more, go to April Fools R Us, an entire site dedicated to April 1st and practical jokes.

The next Big holiday is Buddy's Birthday. Okay it may only be a big Holiday in our house, but still pretty Big. Buddy is our adopted fur child that we rescued from United Yorkie Rescue two years ago. We actually don't know Buddy's birthday but decided to celebrate it on the day after we got him. I really didn't want Buddy's birthday to be on April 1st, I figured he had enough trauma in his life, so we celebrate on April 2nd. He doesn't seem to mind!

Okay so other big celebrations you might want to consider for the month:

National Dog Appreciation Month. I found this great article that tells how to take care of your pet in the event that you become ill or die. Something to think about! Our two dogs our in our Will.

Listenting Awareness Month (my personal favorite) There seems to be a tad bit of controversy about this holiday month. It appears that last month (March) was International Listening Month and April is just Listening Awareness Month - sponsored by Effective Listeners Association. I found a great article by Linda Eve Diamond on the 10 Rules of Listening!

National Fresh Celery Month - this is not to be confused with National Celery Month which is in March! To celebrate try my favorite celery recipe. Take several stalks of celery and spread with peanut butter! Eat and enjoy! You could also add a few raisens on top of the peanut butter! I have heard this called Ants on a Log, I just call it yummy.

National Welding Month (I will celebrate this one in honor of my Father) I was totally surprised when I couldn't find anything on National Welding Month. I do know it is sponsored by The American Welding Society. My father was a Welder so even without much to go on I will just celebrate the month in my own way! I guess I could weld something together.

Pets are Wonderful Month - This month is sponsored by the American Society for the prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However the people down in Palm Springs Florida have created their own Pets are Wonderful Month!

If you are wondering how I know about all these great days to celebrate let me tell you it isn't because I am researching all of them. I have a great book called Celebrate Today by John Kremer. It list all the special months and holidays throughout the year. I love the book becuase if you can't think of a reason to celebrate, this book will give you one.

If you would like to create and register your own special day or month visit Celebrate Today! National Event Registery! You too could have your own special day!

I hope you take advantage of one of these great holidays, or even several, to celebrate the month of April. Let me know how you celebrate April! Post your ideas and comments on the blog.

Fun Friday

Greetings:

Today is Fun Friday. Why you might ask? Because I said so! Any day can be a fun day if you like. It doesn't have to be a Friday, today just happens to be Friday.

I was so excited yesterday because I ran into the Lepreucaun I had met on St. Patrick's Day. Well actually he isn't a "real" Lepreucaun, Branden (his real name) works at Whole Foods. I was having lunch with my best friend David and there he was. I gave Branden my card and told him to check out the blog. Hey Branden if you do stop by say hello!

I am having lunch today with one of my subscribers to 365 Days of Coaching, Kim Kirmmse Toth. I was at a local chapter meeting for the Glaizer/Kennedy group and she was there. She said, "Oh I get your newsletter." How fun is that? We are going to one of my favorite resturants today, PF Changs, and get to know one another. I LOVE meeting subscribers and getting to know them. The greatest people subscribe to 365 Days of Coaching!

Speaking of 365 Days of Coaching have you checked out the new store yet! Just launched it this week and it is wonderful (if I do say so myself). I created all the products but I didn't put the store together. My trusted technical team did that! Great job everyone.

There is more in store as well. I will be launching a coaching club in the near future with my good friend and collegue Christen Resmo. We are calling it The REAL Coaching Club - Real Coaches - Real Coaching. I am so looking forward to it because so many people have been asking if I was going to do something like this. I really didn't want to do it on my own, so now I don't have to! I will have more details soon.

Well I am going to run so that I can continue my fun Friday! I trust you will do something fun today (and every day).

Here's to taking action,

No Complaints Whatsoever

Greetings:

The teleseminar with Rev. Will Bowen, author of A Complaint Free World, was amazing. Rev. Bowen makes a powerful case for not complaining. Rev. Bowen advises that you can be healthier, happier and richer if you would just stop complaining. If you would like to take Rev. Bowen's 21 Day Challenge visit www.acomplaintfreeworld.org and get one of the Complaint Free bracelets.

If you are a member of 365 Days of Coaching you could win one of the beautiful purple Complaint Free bracelets. I am currently having a contest and the first four people who email me the correct answers to the three questions which I published in the Day will receive a bracelet. What, not a member! Join today.

In honor of Rev. Will's teleseminar today I thought I would run a Day I wrote last year about No Complaining. This was before I even heard of Rev. Will and his book.

I Have No Complaints Whatsoever

If you look around and see what is happening in the world, you can see that your life (no matter what your problems, concerns or troubles) is not all that bad. Yes, if you wanted to complain you could, but it won't change anything. Complaining doesn't create change and it doesn't help make anything different. About the only thing that complaining does is annoy people around you.

My rule is that, if I am not going to do anything about changing the situation, I choose not to complain about it. Complaining is detrimental. It can spread negative energy and cause you to be resigned to the way things are. Complaining puts a person in victim mode and creates a feeling of helplessness. Complaining with purpose is one thing (if you are going to actually do something in regard to what you are complaining about), but complaining with no intention of changing anything is a waste of time and energy.

A past co-workers would answer the question "How are you?" with, "I have no complaints whatsoever." Whenever I heard him say that, I would smile and think to myself, Me neither. I actually heard people challenge him, not believing that he had no complaints. Over time I noticed that my co-worker with no complaints seemed happier, healthier and less stressed than my co-workers who did complain.

Coaching

Create a complaint-free zone around yourself. Refuse to complain about anything and don't allow others to complain around you. Complaining doesn't help solve problems; it only makes them worse. Don't waste your energy complaining. Instead, use your energy to change what you are not happy with so that you can live with no complaints whatsoever.

Coaching Question

What are you complaining about?

Live the Day

Today, create a complaint-free zone around yourself. Don't allow yourself or anyone around you to complain. Make it a policy that, unless you are going to do something to change the situation, you won't complain about it.

Quotes

"We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same." Carlos Castaneda

"All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy. We tend to think that being unhappy leads people to complain, but it is truer to say that complaining leads to people becoming unhappy." Dennis Prager

Make it a Complaint free Day, or maybe even week, month, year!

Tell the truth in advance

Greetings:

The issue of 365 Days of Coaching that went out today was titled "Tell the Truth in Advance." The concept came from a talk I heard Zig Zigler give about how to respond when people ask you how you are doing. Zig suggested saying, "I am better than good." When people asked if they should say that if it isn't true he replied, "Well you plan on it being true don't you? All you are doing is telling the truth in advance."

I focused the Day on how to reply to people when they ask you how you are doing. I always answer that question with something like "Better than ever" or "Life is great and only getting better." (that is my personal favorite) I feel like I am simply sharing my positive affirmations with others.

I got to thinking about this and I realized that I have used this concept of telling the truth in advance in other ways as well. When I first started my business people would ask me how it was going. I always replied, "Business is great and only getting better." Or "It is growing every day." Even if business wasn't exactly as good as I wanted it to be I knew it would be someday. I just told the truth in advance. The good news it the truth came true.

I believe that telling the truth in advance is simply sharing your positive affirmations out loud with yourself and others. What you say about how things are and are going to be is important. Your thoughts and words create your future. As long as you are the one creating the future you might as well make it a good one!

Notice how you respond to others when they ask you about your life and how things are going. Do you focus on all the problems and challenges? Or do you tell the truth in advance and create a positive future with your words?

I would love to hear about how you respond to the question, "How are you?" Please leave your comments on the blog.

Here's to taking action,

American Chocolate Week

I have this theory that chocolate slows down the aging process.... It may not be true, but do I dare take the chance? Anonymous

Greetings:

I love chocolate and some how I have missed this amazing celebration - American Chocolate Week. It is always the third week of March and celebrates America's favorite flavor. In case you were wondering, it is sponsored by the Chocolate Manufactures Association! I guess we could have almost guessed that.

In case you need a reason to celebrate chocolate week - one could be your health. Yep come to find out chocolate is actually good for you. Well dark chocolate and in moderation. According to Chocolate.com:

"We've long since known that chocolate contains those healthy things called antioxidants, but now, researchers have discovered a long list of other potential health benefits.

A recent study in the Netherlands showed that eating the equivalent of one-third of a chocolate bar every day could lower blood pressure and also reduce the risk of death by up to 50%.

Chocolate also contains three chemicals that are good for your brain, and can make you feel better.

1. Anandamine: can extend your feelings of happiness and make you laugh more often.
2. Phenylethylamine: raises blood pressure and blood sugar levels just enough to make you more alert, and gives you that "love" feeling.
3. Theobromine: similar to caffeine. It causes relaxation, but also acts as a stimulant by increasing your brain activity."

In addition to American Chocolate week March 19th is National Chocolate Caramel Day
and March 24th is National Chocolate-Covered Raisin Day!

Part of having a great life is enjoying the simple pleasures, and what could be more simple than chocolate!

Happy National Chocolate Week!

Happy Birthday to the Pillsbury Dough Boy

Greetings:

Today is the birthday of the Pillsbury Dough Boy! As I child I just loved that little guy and I love when he would giggle after getting poked in the tummy.

If you would like to have some Dough Boy fun, visit the Homeschooling website, you can even create a Dough Boy dance - I spent way too much time doing that.

Here is a little Dough Boy Trivia thanks to Mary Bellis on About.com:

The Pillsbury Doughboy: his formal name is Poppin' Fresh, the only music he ever performed was rap, he is all dough, he has blue eyes, he always wears a bakers hat and scarf, he originates from Minneapolis, MN, he loves to bake and twenty years ago he had a wife and two pets, Uncle Rollie and Grandmommer and Grandpopper. (no mention what happened to the family!)

If you would like the entire History of Poppin' Fresh visit the General Mills site. You will know all you ever needed to know about the Dough Boy.

So there you have it. Happy Birthday Poppin' Fresh!

I met a Leprechaun

Greetings:

Today is ST. Patrick's Day and I was very lucky because I met a Leprechaun! His name was Branden, which didn't seem very Irish to me, and he was very nice for a Leprechaun! Cute too! He was even giving away gold coins but I knew if I took one it would turn to dust as soon as he walked away (well not actually because Branden's coins were chocolate and he wasn't a real Leprechaun) but that is what the folklore on Leprechauns' said would happen.

You might be wondering where in the world I met a Leprechaun, and actually was able to get close to him without having a trap. Alyson Stanfield (artbizcoach) and I were at Whole Foods today. Alyson is going to be doing a Blog tour for her new book "I'd Rather be in the Studio" in April and she will be appearing on Take Action April 14! (Just wanted to get a little plug in there for her). Anyway we were at Whole Foods and that is where we met the Leprechaun.

We also were lucky enough to hear and see bagpipes being played. I learned something new today because I thought bagpipes were Scottish and that is only half true. "There are two main types of bagpipes, The Irish (Uillean or Elbow) and the Scottish (Great Highland or Small Border)." So now we know!

I certainly hope you are having a lucky day (which means of course you are creating your own luck) and perhaps even get a chance to meet a Leprechaun!

Happy St. Patrick's Day

Picture of St. Patrick from domestic-church.com

Greetings:

ST. Patrick's Day is March 17th and it is one of my favorite holidays. The reason is I was raised Catholic and attended St. Patrick's Church and went to St. Patrick's School 1st through 6th grade. We ways celebrated St. Patrick's Day in our church, school and home. One of the most important things to remember on St. Patrick's Day is to wear green. If you don't wear green you could get pinched. My grandmother always made corn beef and cabbage and decorated cupcakes with green icing and shamrocks.

As I was surfing the Internet for information about St. Patrick's Day I came across information on "How to Catch a Leprechaun." I actually never knew anyone tried to do this but you can actually make a Leprechaun trap. Although it was reported that catching a Leprechaun is very difficult to do, I had to wonder what in the world I would do with a Leprechaun if I did catch one. If you are interested in building a Leprechaun trap visit About.com for details with pictures.

Actually I know very little about St. Patrick except that he is credited for driving the snakes out of Ireland. Other than that I knew he was a priest and he devoted his life to bringing the people of Ireland into the Catholic church. If you want to know "real facts" about St. Patrick check out Kaboose.com

The symbol for my school and church was a Shamrock (the four leaf clover), a symbol often used in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Some fun facts I found about the clover from Kaboose.com:

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest number of leaves found on a clover is 14!

One estimate suggests that there are about 10 000 regular three-leaf clovers for every lucky four-leaf clover.

Legend says that each leaf of the clover means something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck.

Okay I just had to find out exactly what a Leprechaun is. According to Wise Geek:

"A leprechaun (lep' rah kahn) is a mythical Irish elf or faerie that occupies a realm which lies somewhere between the physical and spirit world. There are no female leprechauns noted in folklore, begging an obvious question. Then again, faeries don't follow the same rules as humankind. The leprechaun is said to love his pipe, drink and his solitude, but on occasion he can become social, and when this happens he loves to dance and engage in antics.

A leprechaun is a small man less than 24 inches (610 mm) in height with thick, wiry red hair that is mostly hidden under a three-cornered hat. He has pointed ears, large bushy sideburns or a full curly beard, sparkling green eyes, and fair skin with rosy cheeks and nose. His clothes are mostly green but might include a leather work apron. All leprechauns wear black, shiny leather shoes with silver buckles, as they are excellent cobblers, a reputation and trade in which they take great pride. It is said they make shoes for many sprites in the faerie world."

Another tradition that I have never taken part in on St. Patrick's Day is drinking green beer. The thoughts of drinking beer make me gag so I can't imagine drinking it green. However I know that this is a big deal. However beware, drinking green beer might not bring you luck. My husband and I took a trip up to Loveland on Saturday (about an hour and half from where we live) and all along the highway they had big flashing signs that said, "Don't press your luck - St. Patrick's Day DUI enforced." So if you do decide to drink green beer, also decide who the designated driver will be or call 777-7777 or 333-3333. Save your gold for the Leprechauns and take a taxi.

Instead of going out and celebrating the big holiday you might want to throw a ST. Patrick's Day party at home. I found a great article on just how to do it at ehow.com. My favorite suggestion was about serving green food:

"Create a table of green munchies, including green cookies, green M&Ms and chips with guacamole (See "How to Make Food Green for St. Patrick's Day," Related eHows). Serve them out of green plastic leprechaun hats."

No matter how you decide to celebrate I truly hope you enjoy St. Patrick's Day!

Spring Clean Your Life

The Top Ten Ways to Spring Clean Your Life

Spring-cleaning doesn’t have to be limited to your home or office. The change of the seasons provides a great time for an overall spring-cleaning for your life.

1. Dust away the relationships that no longer serve you

If there is a relationship that has become draining or even toxic, now is the time to clean house. Dust away those people in your life that bring you down or at the very least hold you back. Negative energy is difficult to combat. It is better to let go of those that are not contributing positively, or at the very least limit your contact with them, and bring in some fresh new friends.

2. Trash those nasty habits

We all have them, a habit or two that simply isn’t contributing to our lives. Pick one of those habits and get rid of it. This won’t happen overnight. This is a spring-cleaning project, but just working on getting rid of the habit will be a step in the right direction.

3. Clean up the old credit report

Several of my clients have been shocked when they were turned down for a loan or refinancing because of their credit reports. When they checked into it, they discovered items that were not even theirs or ones that should have been removed years before on there credit report. Now is a great time to clean up that credit report and make sure it is bright and shiny.

4. Freshen up your space

Spring is a great time to rejuvenate your space. This doesn’t have to be costly. Simply move furniture for a more pleasing arrangement and store anything that reminds you of winter.

This would be a great time to bring some positive chi into your space with a little Feng Shui. A great resource is the book by Karen Carter, "Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life." You can get the first chapter of the book by visiting her website.

Get rid of anything you don’t love in your home or office. Clutter on the outside is simply a reflection of what is going on inside of you.

5. Create a Fun Fund

Put a little back each week for something special, like a fun vacation or day at the spa. Make a commitment not to touch the money until you have enough saved for the treat, and enjoy the process and fun of anticipation.

6. Give it back

If you have borrowed something from anyone, now is the time to give it back. Anything that doesn’t belong to you, such as those overdue library books and the shoes from your best friend, needs to go back.

7. Spring into action

Is there something that you have wanted to do, but haven’t made the time for? Well, spring into action and get to work. There is no time like the present to begin turning your goals into reality.

8. Dust off those dreams

Now is also a great time to dust off those dreams and begin to refocus on what is most important to you. We can get so bogged down in the day-to-day stuff that we can forget what our dreams are. Now is the time to clear the space and begin creating your dreams.

9. Freshen up

We can all get stuck in a rut. Now is a great time to freshen up your look, be it a new hairstyle or new addition to our wardrobe. This doesn’t have to be an overhaul; perhaps just a few additions of something in a new spring color will help add that touch of new to your look.

10. Breathe

Spring brings with it a freshness that is exhilarating. Practice deeply breathing in the fresh spring air, clear your lungs and your mind. Deep breathing will help you clean out the cobwebs in your mind and give you a fresh new perspective.

You make your own economy

Greetings:

I just received my e-zine from Jack Canfield and I just had to share it. I am ready to scream with all this talk of a recession coming, the bad economy, the doom and gloom of it all. Do you know that during the Big Depression we had in this country more millionaires were made at that time than any other time in history up to that date in time. And do you realize that more millionaires are being made today than at any other time in history to date. I hear about all this bad economy but the roads are full or newer looking vehicles, my local Mall is packed at noon on Tuesdays and there is a one hour wait at most of the upper scale restaurants in town.

Maybe it is what you choose to notice. I choose to notice the prosperity all around me. The more prosperity I see around me the more opportunities I see in my life and the more prosperity I have in my life.

Jack explains it very well. You make your own economy. It truly is that simple.

The Formula that Changes EVERYTHING
by Jack Canfield

It seems that everywhere you turn these days, you hear people talking about the economy.

What's interesting is that some people are scared to death about it, while others couldn't be happier. While I don't claim to be an economist, I do know one important fact. The economy is the same for everyone, it's how you respond to it that determines how you feel about it.

It's yet another example of what I've been teaching for years. . .

E + R = O
(Events + Responses = Outcome)

The basic idea is that every outcome you experience in life (whether it's success or failure, wealth or poverty, wellness or illness, intimacy or estrangement, joy or frustration) is the result of how you have responded to an earlier event (or events) in your life.

If you don't like the outcomes you are currently experiencing, there are two basic choices you can make:

1.) You can blame the event (E) for your lack of results (O).

In other words, you can blame the economy, the weather, the lack of money, lack of education, racism, gender bias, the current administration in Washington, your wife or husband, your boss's attitude, the lack of support, and so on.

If you're a golfer, you've probably even blamed your clubs!

No doubt all these factors exist, but if they were the deciding factor, nobody would ever succeed. For every reason it's not possible, there are hundreds of people who have faced the same circumstances and succeeded.

It's not the external conditions and circumstances that stop you -- it's you!

We think limiting thoughts and engage in self-defeating behaviors. We defend our self-destructive habits (such as drinking and smoking) with indefensible logic.

We ignore useful feedback, fail to continuously educate ourselves and learn new skills, waste time on the trivial aspects of our lives, engage in idle gossip, eat unhealthy food, fail to exercise, spend more than we make, fail to tell the truth, don't ask for what we want, and then wonder why our lives aren't working.

2.) You can instead simply change your responses (R) to the events (E) until you get the outcomes (O) you want.

You can change your thinking, change your communication, change the picture you hold in your head (your images of the world) and you can change your behavior (the things you do.) That's all you really have any control over anyway.

Unfortunately, most of us are so run by our habits that we never change our behavior. We get stuck in our conditioned responses-to our spouses and children, to our colleagues at work, to our customers and our clients, to our students, and to the world at large.

You have to gain control of your thoughts, your images, your dreams and daydreams, and your behavior.

Everything you think, say, and do needs to become intentional and aligned with your purpose, your values, and your goals.

If you don't like your outcomes, change your responses.

Here's an example of how this works:

Do you remember the Northridge earthquake in 1994? I do! I lived through it in Los Angeles. Two days later I watched as CNN interviewed people commuting to work. The earthquake had damaged one of the main freeways leading into the city. Traffic was at a standstill, and what was normally a 1-hour drive had become a 2-3 hour drive.

The CNN reporter knocked on the window of one of the cars stuck in traffic and asked the driver how he was doing.

He responded, angrily, "I hate California. First there were fires, then floods, and now an earthquake! No matter what time I leave in the morning, I'm late for work. I can't believe it!"

Then the Reporter knocked on the window of the car behind him and asked the driver the same question. This driver was all smiles.

He replied "It's no problem. I left my house at five am. I don't think under the circumstances my boss can ask for more than that. I have lots of music and Spanish-language tapes with me. I've got my cell phone. Coffee in a thermos, my lunch-I even have a book to read. I'm fine."

Now, if the earthquake or the traffic were really the deciding variables, then everyone should have been angry. But everyone wasn't.

It was their individual response to the traffic that gave them their particular outcome. It was thinking negative thoughts or positive thoughts, leaving the house prepared or leaving the house unprepared that made the difference. It was all a matter of attitude and behavior that created their completely different experiences.

If we all experience the same EVENT, the OUTCOME you get will be totally dependent upon your RESPONSE to the situation.

If you want to take control of how you respond to life, you'll start noticing that your outcomes will be more along the lines of what you have always hoped. Remember, you control your destiny so make it a fantastic one!

In like a lion

Greetings:

I was reminded of the old saying today, "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb." I can't predict if the second half of the saying will come true for this year, but I can tell you that March did come in like a lion, at least on the second of the month. Yesterday it was beautiful, Spring like, and today we are having a winter storm. I actually don't mind the drastic change in weather. To me it is simply nature's way of reminding us that life can change really fast and without notice.

Life is like the weather, however unlike the weather you actually have some say in the change. If you are not happy with the way things are in your life you can change it. You are not stuck in any circumstance or situation. That is the good news. The more challenging news is change isn't always something that comes easy to people and it can be downright scary to make changes in your life. Even when people are miserable they are at times reluctant to change. I know there have been times in my life when I have thought, "At least I know this misery. If I make a change it could be worse!" That kind of thinking will keep you stuck right where you are, as it did me for years. I stayed in a job I didn't care for because of my fear there was nothing better out there for me. I finally was forced to take the leap and was delighted to find that there was so much more available out in the big world than I had ever let myself imagine.

If you are stuck in a situation you are not happy with it is time for a change. The change can start with an internal change. First work on being happy from the inside out. Read Marci Shimoff's book Happy For No Reason. That will get you started.

The next thing is to stop complaining about the situation and start focusing on what you can do about it. Read Rev. Will Bowens book "A Complaint Free World."

You have the power to make the changes you want in your life. However going it alone might be too much. Hire a coach, get a mentor or trusted friend to help you with the leap to change. You owe it to yourself to create the best possible life you can have.

Here's to taking Action,

Rachelle

PS If you were wondering about the orgin of the saying, "In like a lion out like a lamb" here is what I found on the Internet. Doesn't seem to be too much history around it but it does date back centuries.

According to the blog dappled things:

"The first appearance of the weather proverb “in like a lion, out like a lamb” is in English literature, in 1624. At that time it was familiar enough to English audiences to appear as a bit of banter in a popular play.

The origins of the expression can be found in astronomy, though later it also became associated with weather."

Here are what The Weather Guys had to say about it:

"The phrase apparently has its origins with the constellations Leo, the Lion, and Aries, the ram or lamb. It has to do with the relative positions of these constellations in the sky at the beginning and end of the month."
