Unofficial "Goals" Month
Greetings:
I have declared October the unofficial Goals month. I think October is a great time to review your goals, make sure you are on track, tweak them or change them. Don't wait until the first of the year, get goaling now!
Goal Setting Overview
1. Make sure the goals you set are for something that you really want, not just
something that sounds good, or you think you should want, or someone else thinks you should have.
2. Goals and actions must work together.
If you have a goal of spending more time with your family, it doesn’t make sense to take a job that includes 90% travel.
3. If you need help from other people in achieving your goal, will you have their
cooperation?
If you need others to achieve your goal, make sure that they also have the same goal as you. It won’t work if you are working towards a goal that they do not want or are not willing to help you achieve.
4. Write your goal in the positives instead of the negative. Work for what you want, not for what you want to leave behind.
5. Write your goal out in complete detail.
Instead of writing, “I want to complete my degree,” write, “I want to complete my bachelors within two years with a 3.5 grade point average.” The clearer you are about what you want the better you will be able to focus on it.
6. Make your goal a stretch. Your goal should be challenging enough to compel you. It should be just out of reach but not unreachable.
7. Turn your goals into positive affirmations. Write your goals as if they already have happened. Such as “I have successfully completed my bachelors degree with a 3.5 GPA.”
So your goals are written down. Now what?
1.Share your goals only with those who will support you in achieving them. Negative attitudes from those who do not share your enthusiasm for your goal can quickly drag you down.
2.Use positive self-talk to keep yourself motivated and passionate about your goal.
3.Review your goals daily. This way you will remind yourself of what you need to do each day to get closer to making your goal a reality. Positive self-talk works on both the subconscious and conscious minds to support you in creating what you want.
4.As you are making decisions, ask yourself how this supports your goals. Will this take you closer or further from the goal? If the answer is "closer to," then you are on the right track. If the answer is “further from” the goal, then it would be a good idea to rethink the decision and see if you can rework it to make it bring your closer to your goal.
Warning: It is natural to take detours on your way to your goals. However, if you keep the goal in mind it will be easier to get back on track. Don’t be too hard on yourself for straying from time to time, it happens. And you don’t want to be so rigid in your goals that you are closed to other opportunities that present themselves.
Live the Day
Rachelle
