Makeup your own words

Greetings:

Several weeks ago I wrote a Day about making up your own words. I had several people write me and tell me they do this all the time and just how freeing it is. Since writing this day I have noticed how many made up words are out there and being used. Companies especially seem to like doing this. My local Cable company has coined a word, Comcastic. They use the word to mean that having their cable service is wonderful. I noticed a Honda ad where they use the word Environmentology. Meaning Honda thinking in action.

Just for fun, take notice of the words that you notice that are not in the dictionary, and hey try making up a few of your own.

Make Up Your Own Words

Following the rules of the English language is important. Since we all have to understand one another it comes in handy that we basically follow the same rules. However, everyone has their own spin on various words and concepts. You certainly don't want to create an entire new language, but you can add your own touch by throwing in a word or two that are all yours.
Rachel Ray, my favorite celebrity cook, is well known for the words Yummo (meaning yummy) and EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil). In part it is what makes Rachel so endearing and interesting. There have been other celebrities that have coined words or phrases.

Don't let the celebrities have all the fun. Coin a word or phrase yourself. If you can't think of an entirely new word don't stress out, simply create a new word using a combination of words. My favorite combo word, fabalicious, is actually pretty popular. I have seen it in print, heard it on television, and there are 1800 mentions of the word when I did a Google search. The one place you won't see it is in the dictionary.

My client, Tamara Burgh, coined the word "Enculturated" for her series "The Enculturated White Man." I've grown so used to it that I find myself using the word!
