Follow Your
Heart
Your heart will get you to where you most desire to go
by Rachelle Disbennet-Lee,
PhD.
I know, your head will tell you the logical thing to do. Your
head will figure out the right way, the surest way and perhaps
even the easiest way. At times, that is what you need to know.
However, there are times when only your heart can lead the way.
Your heart's path might not be the most logical way, the right
way or the easiest way, but it may well be the only way to get
you to where you need to be.
There is a great
commercial on television that shows a woman sitting in front of
a computer looking depressed and disillusioned. All of a sudden
her shirt starts to throb and out of her blouse jumps her heart.
Her heart jumps off the desk, walks into the boss's office,
holds up a sign that says, "I quit" and then walks out of the
boss's office down a hallway. As the little heart is walking out
of the building, there is a caption that reads, "Follow your
heart."
I understand that there are times when following your heart
doesn't make sense, when the heart's urging doesn't seem like
the smartest thing to do. It might not be. What your heart is
telling you is based on intuition, feelings and a sense of
knowing that transcends logic. When your heart speaks, it's best
to listen. There are times in your life when you can't think
your way through; you have to feel your way through.
When I look back over my life I realize that the only time that
my heart has gotten me in trouble was when I didn't listen to
its message. Ignoring my heart has always led to pain and
disappointment. When I follow my heart, I'm never disappointed.
It might not always make sense when I'm doing what I my heart
tells me to do, but it always works out.
Call it your heart, your intuition, your gut, whatever you like
-- it is that part of you that just knows. When you have that
feeling, follow it. Don't try to make sense of it, because it
goes beyond what you can figure out in your head. When you
follow your heart, you will be led in the direction of your true
self.
