Shake Things Up
Rearrange your furniture and your
life
by Rachelle Disbennet-Lee,
PhD.
It
isn't natural for things to stay the same. Life is in constant
flux, and things are always moving around except when it comes
to furniture. People seem to think that, once a room is arranged
in an acceptable way, it has to stay that way forever. Not true.
Once in awhile, shake things up by moving the furniture around.
This will help to move the chi (energy) in the room and will keep
things interesting.
Every
three to four months, I rearrange my living room. I find that
moving the furniture helps to fire up my creativity and keeps
energy from stagnating. My living room is an odd shape, so it
is challenging to find new ways to arrange the furniture. I love
this challenge, as it requires me to be creative and think outside
of the "easy" way to arrange the room. I also know that
I have a favorite way of arranging the furniture, which doesn't
necessarily mean it is the best way. It is just the way I prefer.
Rearranging the furniture helps to keep me open to new ideas and
possibilities. And, if I don't like the way the new arrangement
turns out, all I have to do is rearrange it.
Recently
I was forced to rearrange my office when my computer died and
I had to buy a new system. While at the store getting the new
computer, I decided to replace my printer, fax machine, scanner
and copier with an all-in-one piece of equipment. Because of this
decision, I have much more space in the office. I rearranged my
desk and work area so that it is more open and spacious. I found
it tempting to fill that space with stuff, but I fought the temptation
and will try this more airy design for now. It feels good to have
a "new" office. The energy feels more alive and inviting.
Several
years ago I had a client who had gone through a divorce. Months
after the dust had settled, she was still feeling stuck. She was
still living in the home that she had shared with her former husband
and hadn't changed a thing, even though he had been gone for months.
I suggested she hire a Feng Shui consultant to come to her home
and make suggestions about things she could do to move the energy.
The first thing the consultant suggested was that she rearrange
her bedroom furniture. It was amazing the difference just moving
the furniture made. My client felt it freed her from the past
and she was able to move on.
It
is easy to get in a rut and stick with what is familiar. Once
in a while, shake things up by moving the furniture around. It
might seem odd, but it does help to get the creative juices flowing
and stir up the energy. It is also a risk-free change. If you
don't like it, you can always rearrange it, again.
