=============================================

I was watching Cheryl Richardson on Public Television recently. During her talk, she mentioned how important is it to pass up good for great. That, although we can settle for what is good, it is more important to hold out for what is great. How I equate this is to only do the things you really love.

I have been evaluating my life lately and taking a look at all the things that I do. I made a list and beside each thing I wrote like or love. If the activity does not get a love, then it is eliminated from the list, and my life. I have decided that I simply do not have the time to do things that are just okay. What I want in my life are experiences that are stellar. It has been an interesting process and has required me to take a good look at my life and how I want to spend my time.

Coaching

Some of you are going to think that it is not possible to do only the things you love to do. What about all those "shoulds" and "have tos"? In my opinion, there really isn't any reason to have a "have to" or "should" in our lives. If you really feel that way, ask yourself if that is what you want to give up your life for. Every minute you spend doing something you dislike or even just like, is a minute you could be spending doing something you love.

It may just be a matter of shifting your perspective. If you feel you have to or should, ask yourself why you feel that way. Moreover, how could you bring in a positive element into the activity? It could help to shift your perspective from a half to and should to being a choice or a privilege. Grocery shopping might seem like a have to or should, but think how fortunate you are to be able to go somewhere and pick up food for yourself and your family. You could also add fun into the activity like making sure you have a cold drink to sip as you shop or even wear you Walkman and listen to your favorite music. We can add fun and lightness to almost everything we do if we choose. I have been known to dance down the isles of the grocery store. This not only makes shopping more fun for me, but also provides entertainment for the other shoppers.

Something else that might help is to think in terms of doing only what you can do and delegate the rest. You are not the only person who can do the shopping. You can have your groceries delivered if you choose to or pay someone else to do the shopping if there isn't another adult in the house who can do it. There are many creative ways to get help and support. Creating ways to delegate what we don't love to do will allow us more time to focus on the things we do love to do.

Coaching Challenge

Make a list of all the things you do. Then, next to each activity, write love or like. Once you have this completed, start eliminating all of the activities that you only like. Since this is a process, for this week just eliminate one activity. Keep doing this weekly until the only activities on your list are things you love to do.

Coaching Question

Are you spending your life on things that you like, but don't love to do?

Daily Success Formula

Only doing things you love to do = Spending your life on what is important to you

Quotes

"I get to play golf for a living. What more can you ask for -- getting paid for doing what you love." Tiger Woods

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." Albert Schweitzer
