I am Goldenrod

=============================================

Keeping with my theme for the year of "Getting Out There," I decided to submit a proposal to speak at the annual International Coach Federation Convention to be held this year in Atlanta, Georgia. I must tell you that the thought of speaking to 250 coaches makes me queasy. It took me a month to put the proposal together. I just couldn't seem to work through it. It was such a struggle that I decided to call a coach for support. I felt worse after speaking with this coach. The advice was not helpful and made me feel that I could not do this. I was ready to abandon the idea.

Then I called my friend and most excellent coach, Christen Murphy. I told her my dilemma. She provided the coaching I needed. Christen advised me to be myself, put what I wanted on the proposal and let go of the outcome. It wasn't about being selected. It was about representing myself in the way I was most comfortable. I mentioned to Christen that I wanted to copy my proposal on to goldenrod paper instead of the predictable white paper. She said, "You are Goldenrod." It has been my mantra ever since.

Coaching

The hardest thing we will ever have to do is be is ourselves. It can be so difficult because it makes us vulnerable. I could have written a proposal that fit the suggested list, but it would not have been me. I would rather not be selected than be accepted for pretending to be someone I'm not.

I am Goldenrod. I am bright and different and a little "out there." Although I am difficult for some people to handle, it is the only way that I can truly be me and be happy. Trying to be someone else is actually painful. I know because I spent many years trying to be what others wanted me to be. Not anymore. I have to be the me I came here to be even if that means being a little out there and a little too goldenrod.

Are you ready to be goldenrod (or some other outrageous color)?

Daily Success Formula

Being Goldenrod = Being me

Quotes

Most people want to be different just like everyone else. Coach Lee

"To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting." e. e. cummings

"If you do not express your own original ideas, if you do not listen to your own being, you will have betrayed yourself. Also, you will have betrayed your community in failing to make your contribution." Rollo May
