=============================================

Phobias are common in our society and do not pose a significant threat to a person unless they impede or disrupt a person's life. When the phobia interferes with the person's day-to-day functioning, it can be a reason for alarm.

If you are gnosiophobic it can hinder how well you do in life. What is gnosiophobia? Gnosiophobia is a fear of knowledge. Gnostic means to possess knowledge. It may seem silly that anyone would be afraid of knowledge, but there are times when not knowing can provide a sort of comfort. As the saying goes, "What we don't know can't hurt us." Not true. Not knowing is worse than accepting responsibility for what is and dealing with it. Ignoring something doesn't make it go away and pretending that we don't know something doesn't mean that it isn't happening.

There can be many situations where knowledge can cause fear. We might fear learning a new job because we are afraid we will fail. We may be afraid of knowledge that would challenge the way we work now. Knowledge often causes change.

Knowledge can also be freeing. Once we have the knowledge, we can deal with situations based on our knowledge and not on assumptions or guesses. Knowledge is power. Don't be afraid to know. Step into the power that knowledge provides and use it. It can be uncomfortable at times to know. Be willing to be uncomfortable. Although knowledge can cause discomfort, the lack of knowledge causes pain. What you don't know can and will hurt you!

Coaching

Being gnosiophobic doesn't mean it has to be in all aspects of your life. You may be fine in most areas, but want to remain ignorant in others. There were times in my life where I had selective gnosiophobia. I once dated a man who I knew was cheating on me, but I pretended not to know because knowing meant that I would have to confront him. There were times when I decided not to know because I didn't want the responsibility that greater knowledge demanded.

Once we learn that knowledge is a useful tool, we can begin to heal our gnosiophobia and step into the power of knowledge. Knowledge allows us to be at choice. We can't make informed choices if we don't know or refuse to know. Once we open up to knowledge, we open up to the power it provides to us. One of the best ways to keep someone down is to withhold knowledge from them. Someone who doesn't know can't make informed choices and can fall victims to those who do know. Knowledge is power. Seize the power.
